A job or A business?

Which is better: A job or a business?

There has been a lot of controversy about which is better, to get a job or to start a business, to be an employee or to be an employer/Entrepreneur. In my previous article, I discussed finding a business idea. In this article, we will be discussing which is better A job or a Business?

What's a job?

A job according to Wikipedia is an activity, often regular and often performed in exchange for payment. A person can begin a job by becoming an employee or volunteering etc. The duration of the job ranges from days to weeks to months but are usually all temporary.

What is a business?

A business is defined as an organization or an enterprising entity engaged in a commercial, industrial, or professional activity. It also refers to the organized efforts and activity of an individual to produce and sell goods and services while earning profits.

Getting a job or starting a business is largely dependent on a person, different people have different likings and capacity to do things. Certain people feel comfortable with having a job because of the stability it gives them, from the fixed income to a limited or no risk is taken and financial stability. They usually have a fixed timetable and limited hours of working, limited risk, and responsibilities at their work. If they don't like their job, they can easily switch their jobs to a better one without giving it much thought.

But businesses are the opposite of that, the profit gained in a business is always dependent on your hard work, strategies, and your skills. The time, effort, energy, and resources you put in are usually directly proportional to the profits you get back in return. Some people think they are made to do business, they love to take risks, they want to grow more in little time, want to create wealth, and live life on their terms. Doing business requires some specifics qualities, managing people and matters, taking smart decisions, and implementing strategies to achieve set goals in stipulated time.

Let's identify some differences between job and businesses

Risk

Starting and running a business is riskier than getting a job. While working a job there is usually a sense of stability, you can be kicked out of the job and yet find a new job.

As a business owner, you will spend time learning multiple things, looking for resources, motivating yourself and your employee. Losing your business overnight can be a nightmare.

Money

There's is no limit on how much and how fast a business owner can earn or lose in a business. While working in a job, you will have to wait for a certain period (usually month end) for payment, no matter how good you are.

Learning

A business owner always has to keep learning, as a boss you have to learn about many different things, keep up with the latest trend, and ensure that your business is efficiently and effectively delivering its product. You can't afford to stop learning.

But as an employee, you would learn how to be great in what you do not necessarily all aspects.

Security

On a scale of 1-10, jobs are usually 7% more secure. An employee has a stable and a fixed income, flexible working schedule and if fired can easily find a new job.

But a successful business is more secure than a successful employee. An employee can be retrenched at any time based on the perception of the business. But a business owner is in charge and if his/her business is successful it gives a better sense of security.

Investment

One doesn't need investment to do a job, to work as an employer, but you need a good investment to start a business.

Responsibility

A business owner has a lot of responsibility than anyone in the company. They manage resources, take important decisions, motivate employees, etc. A good employee considers himself as the owner of the work assigned to him only. A business owner has to oversee almost everything.

So it is a matter of perspective, experience, and ability. It varies from person to person. People switch jobs/professions/businesses as their life situation, Vision, and perspective change. So one must check his/her capabilities and goals in life so they can choose wisely and enjoy their job or enjoy running a business enterprise.
